News, notes and reader questions about the San Francisco 49ers

4:42 p.m. Haven't received the official word yet, but Michael Lewis (concussion), Patrick Willis (ankle), Parys Haralson (foot), David Baas (foot) and Tarell Brown (toe) are not expected to play. They will be replaced by Mark Roman, Jeff Ulbrich, Ahmad Brooks, Tony Wragge and Dre Bly respectively.

4:47 p.m. No sign of Jed York before the game. Maybe he's in the owner's box chatting with Al Davis about sharing a stadium. Remember, Santa Clara is a stone's throw from the Alameda County line and it's actually a shorter drive to Oakland than it is to San Francisco.

5:11 p.m. Mike is mic-ed. That is, Mike Singletary is wearing a microphone for this game. Let's hope Vernon Davis doesn't incur an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty.

5:13 p.m. Nate Clements -- appropriately -- is one of the captains. Raiders win toss, elect to receive.

5:17 p.m. Strong opening series for Niners defense. Lawson overpowers tight end's block on second down. Raiders go three and out.

5:22 p.m. An OK opening drive for Alex Smith. He hits Vernon Davis for one first down. But Davis drops another third-down pass that would have prolonged the drive.

5:28 p.m. Raiders get one medium pass, but drive stalls when JaMarcus Russell falls down and is "sacked" on third down. Punt.

5:30 p.m. Coffee replaces Gore, runs for two yards on first down. Gains 16 on second down.

5:33 p.m. Isaac Bruce also out; Battle just caught a first-down pass.

5:34 p.m. I think Alex Smith's right shoulder is ok. He just used it to level Raiders defensive end Greg Ellis on a reverse. ... 3rd and 9 ...Smith's pass to Morgan dropped, intercepted by Ricky Brown, who is tackled -- hard -- by Smith. First and goal from the Niners' 7-yard line ...

5:41 p.m. Raiders go for it on 4th and goal from the three, but Russell pass to Louis Murphy is inc. Smith takes over at the three ... a good opportunity to make a big impression. Smith actually has looked good so far but isn't getting much help.

5:48 p.m. Coffee burst through the line to gain 18 yards. Will he be preseason leading rusher by the end of the day?

2Q. Shaun Hill now in at quarterback. Coffee has another 18-yard gain.

5:51 p.m. A solid, Coffee-driven drive stalls at midfield. Hill is bailed out when bad pass is wrestled away from a Raiders defender by Josh Morgan. Niners go for it on fourth and two but Hill's pass is batted at line of scrimmage.

6:01 p.m. Uh-oh. Dre Bly may have hurt right arm on last tackle ...

6:05 p.m. Louis Murphy, who inspired the 49ers' 'greatest practice ever' on Wednesday scores a wide-open touchdown. No safety help (Roman) on the play.

6:07 p.m. Bly merely had the wind knocked out. He's probable to return.

6:20 p.m. Long, Coffee-driven drive sputters at end. Joe Nedney drills short field goal. Right tackle Adam Snyder comes up limping and holding right knee. Marvel Smith is in.

6:25 p.m. Snyder has a right ankle and knee sprain. His return is questionable.

6:31 p.m. Jeff Garcia pass to Johnnie Lee Higgins is tipped and picked off by Allen Rossum. Two plays and the half is over ....
