Oregon running LeGarrette Blount has decided that perhaps the 49ers have enough big-bodied running backs and will join the Titans instead, according to a report in The Tennessean. The report has been confirmed by a source close the situation. Blount was the marquee name in a list of undrafted free agents the 49ers hauled in after the three-day draft ended Saturday.
But the 241-pount Blount evidently thought he'd have a better chance with the Titans, which shipped running back LenDale White to Seattle on Saturday. The 49ers, meanwhile, had drafted Mississippi State running back Anthony Dixon in the sixth round before reeling in Blount. They already have Frank Gore, Glen Coffee and Michael Robinson, and they also are taking a look at fullback-running back Jehuu Caulcrick this offseason.
The report said that Blount explained his decision to Mike Singletary in a phone conversation. (Would have liked to have been a fly on the wall for that one). Blount rushed for more than 1,000 yards and scored a boggling 17 touchdowns as a junior. But his senior season took a bad turn when he punched out a Boise State player following a loss and was suspended for three months. Based on talent alone, the 49ers had Blount rated as a fifth-round player.
The 49ers haven't officially announced their undrafted free-agent pickups precisely because the players and their agents sometimes change their minds. That being said, the following players have signed deals with the 49ers, according to their agents:
LeRoy Vann, CB, PR, Florida A&M
Patrick Stoudamire, CB, Western Illinois.
Chris Maragos, FS, Wisconsin.
Jarrett Brown, QB, West Virginia.
Jared Perry, WR, Missouri.
Shay Hodge, WR, Ole Miss
Scott Long, WR, Louisville
Tramaine Brock, CB/S, Belhaven
Keaton Kristick, ILB, Oregon State
