Singletary stumping for 49ers stadium

Santa Clara voters don't go to the polls until June, but the NFL issued a big vote of confidence today about plans for a 49ers stadium in that city. The league's Super Bowl Advisory Committee gave a plug to the new stadium by saying it would "support and encourage" a Super Bowl bid. Of course, the statement wasn't a guarantee that Santa Clara would get a Super Bowl, but it was added another boost of momentum to a stadium initiative that appears to be gathering steam before the June vote.

In another stadium-related matter, NFL Commissioner Rodger Goodell was in San Jose today to meet with the Silicon Valley Leadership Group. The group is composed of CEOs from 300 of the largest businesses in the area, and the 49ers - and the NFL - want their support for the stadium. The meeting included Goodell, team president Jed York, tight end Vernon Davis and Mike Singletary, who - perhaps not surprisingly - reportedly gave attendees a rousing speech about the stadium prospects.

"It was an inspirational speech, a pep talk and beyond," Santa Clara mayor Patricia Mahan said. "He spoke about the difference between a dream and a vision. He said the stadium was the vision of the owners, the vision of the team, the vision of the NFL."

In other words, the 49ers are pulling out their biggest guns as the vote approaches. Santa Clara heads to the polls on June 8.

Add two more local names to the list of players who will be given tryouts at this weekend's 49ers' minicamp. Stanford QB Tavita Pritchard and OL/DL Matt Kopa also will attend, according to the university. Kopa, who is from Elk Grove, had foot surgery in February and has been hoping for a sixth season of NCAA eligibility.
