A slot receiver shaped like a bowling ball has caught the eye of the 49ers. Personnel chief Trent Baalke attended the pre-supplemental-draft workout this week for Vanness Emokpae of Truman State. Emokpae stands 5-11 and weighs 242 pounds and was listed as a receiver on the school's web site. In fact, Emokpae did a little of everything at Truman State, including playing quarterback in the Wildcat. He led the team in receiving in 2007 and in rushing attempts in 2009. (He suffered an ACL tear in 2008). Given his dimensions, most NFL teams - and presumably the 49ers - see him as a fullback, but the guy has the athletic ability of a Romanian gymnast. See below:
As I wrote yesterday about another supplemental draft candidate, BYU's Harvey Unga, the 49ers seem to have plenty of big-bodied running backs and fullbacks on the roster. Baalke also attended the workout for Illinois defensive tackle/nose tackle Joshua Price-Brent this week. He didn't have far to drive. Emokpae's workout was in Missouri.
