If Mike Singletary hit his players with a sledgehammer in Week One of training camp, he's graduated to a fluffy, down pillow in Week 2. The 49ers just finished another light, non-padded practice that was accompanied by music -- "My Girl" and other Motown tunes. They'll have a full-team practice tomorrow morning and a special teams practice in the afternoon before flying to Indianapolis Saturday morning. Their next practice isn't until Tuesday afternoon.
A quick injury update: Michael Crabtree was standing on the field during the afternoon practice today but did not participate. I'm no doctor (my mother's still upset about that) but it doesn't seem like the receiver's neck strain is too serious.
Fullback Brit Miller (ankle) also was at practice but didn't participate. Miller seemed to be moving around fine, although ankle injuries sometimes are worse the day after.
Receiver Brandon Jones got another workout from strength and conditioning coach Duane Carlisle. Jones appears to be close to returning to the field after suffering a hamstring injury.
Another hamstring victim, Jason Hill, made it through practice. Strains and pulls have been Hill's downfall in previous offseasons, and he needs to make it through this one unscathed.
Newcomer Will Tukuafu is wearing No. 63 and he's already been thrown into the mix at defensive end. It looks as if Tukuafu will see some action Sunday in Indianapolis.
Patrick WIllis, Takeo Spikes, Justin Smith, Michael Lewis and Barry Sims all were given "veteran courtesies" during the afternoon.
One more thing ... still no sign of Kentwan Balmer.
