The 49ers will begin Saturday's third preseason game in Oakland with what they hope will be their opening-day lineup. Almost. The one would-be starter who won't play against the Raiders is tight end Vernon Davis, who hasn't practiced since spraining his knee Aug. 15. But Mike Singletary said three players who have yet to play in the preseason - Frank Gore, Brian Westbrook and Michael Crabtree - will make their summer debuts.
Singletary said Gore would play "maybe a series, maybe a little more - depends on how the game is going." He said that Crabtree would play perhaps a quarter. The rest of the starters figure to play the first half. David Carr is scheduled to take over for Alex Smith in the second half at quarterback. Singletary says it's "a possibility" that No. 4 quarterback Jarrett Brown could see some snaps Saturday.
Singletary said that receiver Bobby Guillory likely will get more chances at punt returner and kick returner. But he said he'd also like to see receiver Kevin Jurovich and perhaps cornerback Phillip Adams return a punt or two. Both Jurovich and Adams have taken a few repetitions during the week, but Guillory has been the primary returner.
Receiver Jason Hill (groin) was limited in practice. Tight end Tony Curtis (quad), tackle Barry Sims (oblique) and linebacker Matt Wilhelm (headache) did not practice.
Good news, Sacramento. There will be no tape delay in Sacto like there will be in the Bay Area where Saturday's game will begin at 9 p.m. despite the 6 p.m. start. KCRA 3 will have the Raiders broadcast while KOVR 13 will have the 49ers. Take that, Bay Area!
