The bewitching hour is Saturday at 1 p.m. That's the deadline by which the 49ers and every other team in the league must trim 22 spots from their roster. The 49ers could do it as early as tomorrow. Some of the decisions ride on whether a player can be kept around a developed on the practice squad. Generally speaking, here's who can be on the eight-man squad:
• A. Players who do not have an accrued NFL season of free agent credit; or
• B. Players who have one or more accrued seasons, but who were on the 45-player Active List for fewer than nine regular season games during each of such accrued seasons; or
• C. Players who have not been on a practice squad more than two seasons
Obviously, all rookies are eligible, although it seems as if the team's eight-man draft class has secured spots on the 53-man roster. Some players the 49ers could be eying for the practice squad: receiver Kevin Jurovich, linebacker Keaton Kristick, tackle Matt Kopa. And if they don't make the active roster, you can bet the 49ers would want Curtis Taylor, Khalif Mitchell and Alex Boone to land on the practice-squad.
