The early favorite to be the 49ers' so-called "camp leg" in 2011 once made a 68 yarder with plenty of room to spare. (see below). Fabrizio Scaccia made that kick while playing semi-pro ball for the Port St. Lucie Bobcats. Scaccia, 26, also has played for the Arizona Rattlers of the Arena League and spent this season with your hometown Sacramento Mountain Lions of the UFL. The 49ers signed Scaccia and offensive lineman Dennis Landolt (Penn State) to their practice squad today.
Scaccia was the UFL's player of the week following a game-winning 43-yard field goal over the Las Vegas Locomotives in Week 8. He was 17-17 on PATs and was 12-16 on field goals this year for the Mountain Lions. He also kicked field goals of 66 and 62 yards in 2009, the same season he booted the 68 yarder above.
The 49ers placed their regular kicker, Joe Nedney, on injured reserve this season after he was slow to recover from a right (plant leg) knee strain suffered the first time the 49ers played the Rams on Nov. 14. He is under contract for one more season. The team signed Jeff Reed to fill in. Reed has not missed a field goal since joining the 49ers but is only signed through the end of the season.
Shane Andrus served as Nedney's back-up this past offseason. Scaccia is a candidate to do it in 2011, especially since the crop of incoming rookie kickers is not considered very strong.
