Jed York interviewed former Broncos general manager Ted Sundquist today, according to a source with knowledge of the interview, bringing the list of known interviews to three. York spoke with former Rams executive Tony Softli on Tuesday and had a phone conversation with former Raiders executive and one-time 49ers scout Michael Lombardi on Tuesday night.
It's known that former Saints executive Rick Mueller, too, is on York's list of candidates to be the 49ers next general manager. Former Bills general manager Tom Donahoe also is on York's radar and the team has interviewed Randy Mueller, currently an executive with the Chargers, in the past. It's widely believed, however, that in-house candidate Trent Baalke is the leader and it's been reported by Fox Sports and CSN Bay Area that Baalke will land the job. Lombardi, in fact, predicted that Baalke would be promoted to the position in short order.
I spoke with Sundquist, who lives in Colorado, earlier this week. If congeniality - being able to get along with a head coach - is indeed a top criterion, then he might win the contest hands down. Sundquist joined the Broncos as a scout in 1993 and eventually worked his way up to general manager. After leaving the Broncos in 2008, he contributed to Profootballtalk.com for two years before joining the Omaha Nighthawks as their director of player personnel.
And how could you not consider a guy who once was on the U.S. National Bobsled Team, which Sundquist was a part of from 1984-1988?
