It was a good day for Alex Smith. Not only did the 49ers pass on a quarterback early in Thursday's draft, but his head coach no longer wooing him from afar. The fact that the NFL lockout has been lifted, temporarily at least, means that Harbaugh and his coaches can have contact with players again.
Alex Smith is not one of his players. He's an unrestricted free agent. But Harbaugh said he's been in contact nonetheless. "I did talk to Alex today," he said. "And he's coming by tomorrow." Harbaugh has been praising Smith since January and Smith has a standing, one-year offer from the team. Because he is a 49ers free agent, Smith can sign a waiver to work out at the team facility.
Teams are permitted to pass out playbooks to their players and they are also expected to get a set of rules for free agency, trades and other transactions. Free agency could begin as soon as Monday.
