Bubble Boys: Adams, McKillop, Zeigler present roster dilemma

****** UPDATE 8/29 ****** McKillop played extensively for the first time in training camp and looked good. he tied for the team lead with rookie cornerback chris Culliver with seven tackles. Adams also has been looking more fluid than he did early in camp but right now would be the tam's sixth cornerback. Zeigler played on special and at receiver. He had one catch for 10 yards.

The 49ers must begin trimming their rosters Tuesday, and Phillip Adams, Scott Mckillop and Dominique Zeigler will present the team with some of its thorniest roster questions. All three suffered severe injuries last season and none was 100 percent recovered when training camp began. In fact, it's fair to say that none is back to full strength now.

The 49ers have to ask themselves whether any of the three players is worth occupying a roster spot now even though the player might not be able to contribute until later in the season. That's partially why Jim Harbaugh is going with an unconventional approach to today's third preseason game. He wants to give players like Adams (ankle), McKillop (knee) and Zeigler (knee) - who have not played a lot in the preseason - more opportunities to state their case.

Complicating matters is that none of the three has practice-squad eligibility, which, as in previous years is defined as A.) A player without an accrued season of NFL experience. B.) A player who has not been on a practice squad for more than three seasons. C.) A free agent who was on the 45-man active list for fewer than nine regular-season games during their only accrued season.

Teams must reduce rosters from 90 to 80 players on Tuesday. On Saturday, they must trim the rosters to 53 players. After that, they can build an eight-man practice squad. But those players must first pass through waivers.

Every rookie on the roster - all 28 -- can land on the practice squad. Here are the other 49ers who are eligible this season:

OT Alex Boone
CB Tramaine Brock
FB Jack Corcoran
G Nick Howell
LB Alex Joseph
WR Kevin Jurovich
LB Keaton Kristick
S Chris Maragos
RB Xavier Omon
S Curtis Taylor
DE Will Tukuafu
WR Kyle Williams
