News, notes and reader questions about the San Francisco 49ers

Source: 49ers have their eye on ex-Bill LB Maybin (Updated)

****UPDATE 7:32 p.m. ***** Maybin's agent said the 49ers are no longer in the running.

The 49ers are one of the teams vying for former Buffalo outside linebacker Aaron Maybin, according to a league source. Maybin was the 11th overall pick of the 2009 draft but to this point has been a huge disappointment in Buffalo and was released yesterday. He passed through waivers earlier today and is now a free agent.

The Bears, Broncos, Colts and Jets also have shown interest in the 23-year-old outside linebacker/defensive end, according to Yahoo.com. Maybin left school in 2009 as an undersized underclassman and never became the pass rusher the Bills hoped they were getting. He played in 27 games his first two seasons with only one start and no sacks.

Contacted yesterday, Maybin's agent said San Francisco was one of the teams Maybin hoped to play for. He is close to 49ers tight end Vernon Davis, who grew up in Washington, D.C. Maybin was raised nearby in Maryland. Maybin also was on the same Penn State team as 49ers linebacker NaVorro Bowman.

The 49ers released an outside linebacker, Thaddeus Gibson, on Monday.

Right guard Chilo Rachal was nicked late in practice today and was replaced by Adam Snyder on the first-team offensive line. Snyder, in fact, had received several snaps in Rachal's usual spot before Rachal got hurt. The details and extent of the injury are unknown. Jonathan Goodwin stepped in at center when Snyder moved to guard.

Joe Staley, who appeared to tweak his ankle yesterday, was back at left tackle today. Running back Anthony Dixon also returned to practice. First-team cornerbacks Carlos Rogers and Shawntae Spencer are not practicing.
