Source: Reggie Smith has a torn meniscus

Safety Reggie Smith has a tear in the meniscus of one of his knees, a league source said this afternoon. Smith, who had been working with the 49ers' first-team defense since the start of camp, left practice on Saturday and did not return. The injury is a relatively common one and is expected to keep Smith out "a couple of weeks," the source said, but is not long-term.

The 49ers on Monday agreed to terms with another safety, Dashon Goldson, on a one-year deal. Goldson, a starter the previous two seasons, presumably will start alongside newcomer Donte Whitner. While Whitner is more of a traditional strong safety, Goldson, a former college cornerback, is more in the mold of a free safety.

The other candidates for the starting job while Smith is out are C.J. Spillman and Madieu Williams. Spillman has practiced with the first- and second-team defenses since training camp began. Williams has been with the second team.
