***UPDATE 10/04 *** The 49ers confirmed these transactions. They also announced they have signed WR John Matthews, who played for Jim Harbaugh at the University of San Diego in 05-06, to the practice squad. Matthews was signed as an undrafted rookie by the Colts in 09.
Defensive end Will Tukuafu, who recovered a fumble out of the air in his first-ever NFL regular-season snap in Week 1, injured his wrist during Sunday's game in Philadelphia and will be sent to injured reserve, according to multiple league sources. Rookie safety Colin Jones, who was briefly on the 53-man roster when the season began, will move up from the practice squad. Those transactions have yet to be completed.
It's not yet known how Tukuafu was hurt. However, he will have surgery on the wrist. He had been filling in as a backup defensive end this season. It was in that role that Tukuafu, on Sept. 11 against Seattle, grabbed a ball that was jarred loose by outside linebacker Parys Haralson and returned it 12 yards to set up a David Akers field goal.
The injury raises the possibility that undrafted rookie Demarcus Dobbs, who had an excellent exhibition season, will be active on game days. Dobbs and four other rookies -- nose tackle Ian Williams, guard Daniel Kilgore, tackle Mike Person and quarterback Scott Tolzien -- have been inactive for all four 49ers games this year. Dobbs dominated backup offensive linemen in the preseason, finishing with two sacks and eight tackles.
Jones, meanwhile, was purely a special teams player for the 49ers during the preseason. The 49ers selected Jones in the sixth round this year out of TCU.
