According to a source, the 49ers will treat returner/receiver Kyle Williams for a concussion this week after he was sandwiched by two defenders on a kick return in the fourth quarter. Former 49er Michael Robinson was penalized for a helmet-to-helmet hit on the play.
Williams' injury potentially could create problems for the 49ers at both receiver and returner. Ted Ginn warmed up before today's game on his sprained ankle but had a noticeable limp and was inactive. Among the other punt-return candidates on the team are backup safety Reggie Smith and cornerback Chris Culliver, both of whom worked at that role in training camp. Kendall Hunter is a likely candidate at kick returner -- something he did in the preseason -- if neither Ginn nor Williams could play.
Of the 49ers who have suffered concussions this season - Alex Smith, Jonathan Goodwin and tackle Joe Staley - none has missed the following game. After returning to the Bay Area, Williams Tweeted: "Finally home and feelin a lil better. Thank u everyone for your prayers and blessings.. 12-3"
Delanie Walker's playoff future is cloudy after he sustained what teammates suspected was a broken jaw in the first quarter. Justin Peelle filled in Saturday. The only other tight end on the roster is undrafted rookie Konrad Reuland, who is a member of the practice squad.
