49ers hold on to defeat St. Louis Rams 34-27

Withstanding a hard-charging comeback by the St. Louis Rams, the 49ers won their final regular-season game, defeating the Rams 34-27 and clinching the No. 2 seed in the NFC playoffs.

Receiver Michael Crabtree scored two touchdowns for the 49ers. Quarterback Alex threw for 219 yards, pushing him over 3,000 for the season, the first time he has surpassed that milestone.

Matt was born in Blacksburg, Va., and attended the University of Virginia. He graduated in 1995, went to Northwestern for a journalism degree a year later, and got his first job at a South Carolina daily in 1997. He joined The Bee as a Metro reporter in 1999 and started covering the 49ers in 2003. His favorite player of all time is Darrell Green.
