The 49ers went through their first practice of their off week missing some key players who were banged up in Sunday's finale. Starting defensive ends Justin Smith and Ray McDonald (hamstring) did not practice, nor did starting cornerback Carlos Rogers (knee) and nickel back Chris Culliver (knee). Tight end Delanie Walker (jaw), meanwhile, was in the building but likely won't practice for a while and still may be placed on injured reserve.
The news was better for Ted Ginn (ankle), Kyle Williams (concussion), Bruce Miller (knee) and Patrick Willis (hamstring). All four were active at the start of practice, although Williams was wearing a black jersey that signals that he should avoid contact.
Justin Smith was dressed in sweat pants and sweat shirt and was with the defensive linemen as they went through drills. McDonald was not on the practice field. Rogers and Culliver both were dressed in their uniforms but did not have helmets. Culliver had a limp; Rogers knee has been bothering him in the second half of the season but has not affected him in games.
Newcomer Ricky Elmore is wearing No. 58.
