The 49ers on Friday released wide receiver Dontavia Bogan, an undrafted rookie in 2011 who tore his ACL in the first week of training camp. Bogan reported via Twitter Thursday that he had been medically cleared to return to playing. "Im officially cleared to play now. #DamnYouAcL haha," Bogan wrote.
Bogan, who played at South Florida, was one of the 49ers' highest priority free agents when the lockout ended in July. However, unlike tight end Nate Byham and cornerback Curtis Holcomb, who also suffered season-ending injuries before the season began and were placed on injured reserve, Bogan did most of his rehabilitation away from team headquarters.
The team currently has seven receivers under contract: Michael Crabtree, Ted Ginn, Joe Hastings, Mario Manningham, John Matthews, Randy Moss and Kyle Williams. They likely will head into the season with five or six on the active roster.
