The 49ers began practicing for Week 1 opponent Green Bay today without two of their wide receivers. Ted Ginn still is recovering from an ankle injury suffered Sunday in Denver while Mario Manningham is mourning the death of his grandfather in Ohio. The funeral service was held Thursday.
Also missing were Parys Haralson and Brandon Jacobs (knee). Haralson's injury is unknown, and his absence meant that the only two healthy outside linebackers on the 53-man roster are Ahmad Brooks and Aldon Smith. According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the 49ers put a waiver claim for former Dolphins outside linebacker Jamaal Westerman, but he was awarded to Cardinals instead. The 49ers also have inquired about free agent Chavis Williams.
One bit of good news was that Demarcus Dobbs (leg bruise) was back at practice, albeit in a black "no-contact" jersey. If the 49ers were short on outside linebackers, Dobbs at least could fill in as a third-down pass rusher.
Along with Aldon Smith, linebacker NaVorro Bowman also was back at practice.
