The San Francisco Giants are giving a tip of the hat to Alex Smith.
One day after Smith revealed that he had been fined $15,000 by the NFL earlier this year for wearing a Giants cap after a playoffs game, Bochy donned a red 49ers cap while talking to reporters before today's game against the Rockies.
"Alex supported us, so I'm going to support him," Bochy said, according to the San Jose Mercury News. "They're a great club, and I'm honored to wear it."
According to NFL rules, players must wear league-sponsored apparel 90 minutes before and after games. The league later reconsidered Smith's fine - along with a similar one on New England's Wes Welker - and he was given a warning instead.
Smith today said he had seen the photo of Bochy wearing a 49ers cap in the dugout and gave it a thumb's up. "The magic number's five, right?" he said.
