The 49ers began building their eight-man practice squad this morning. Receiver Nathan Palmer and safety Michael Thomas were among the players who signed. So was offensive tackle Kenny Wiggins, who starred at Elk Grove High before playing at Fresno State.
The 49ers hoped to sign offensive lineman Mike Person to the practice squad. Instead, Person was claimed off of waivers by the Colts, his agent said. Person, a seventh-round pick in 2011, had been the subject of trade talks last season, but the Colts were not one of the teams that showed interest at that point.
In addition, tight end Konrad Reuland was claimed off of waivers and placed on the Jets' 53-man squad, his agent said. Receiver Chris Owusu was signed to the Chargers practice squad. Former 49ers center Chase Beeler signed with the Eagles practice squad.
With only eight offensive linemen on the 53-man roster, the 49ers added two to their practice squad -- Al Netter, who played at Northwestern, and Wiggins. Both can play tackle. The team also signed outside linebacker Cam Johnson, a seventh-round pick who battled a knee injury this offseason, to the practice squad. The 49ers have only three outside linebackers on the active roster.
Including practice squadders Tony Jerod-Eddie and Matthew Masifilo, the 49ers have nine defensive linemen.
