Two running backs, Brandon Jacobs and LaMichael James, are among the 49ers' inactives today. That leaves the 49ers with Frank Gore, Kendall Hunter and Anthony Dixon at the position. Here's the full list:
TE Garrett Celek
WR Ted Ginn (ankle)
RB Brandon Jacobs (knee)
RB LaMichael James
G Joe Looney
QB Scott Tolzien (3rd QB)
NT Ian Williams
What's also notable is that first-round pick A.J. Jenkins is active, one of five wide receivers available today. The others are Michael Crabtree, Randy Moss, Mario Manningham and Kyle Williams.
Ginn's absence means that Williams will handle punt returns. Hunter is likely to take over on kick returns. Who would handle the punt-return duties if Williams got hurt? Probably Perrish Cox.
Jacobs will be replaced by Anthony Dixon and, probably, Frank Gore on short-yardage carries. With no Celek, Demarcus Dobbs will function as the No. 3 tight end, although Leonard Davis is likely to enter the game at the position in short-yardage situations.
The designations also mean that all five safeties - Dashon Goldson, Donte Whitner, C.J. Spillman, Darcel McBath and Trenton Robinson - are active for the game against the pass-happy Packers.
Packers inactives:
WR Jarrett Boykin
S Sean Richardson
CB Davon House
CB Brandon Ross
RB James Starks
LB Jamari Lattimore
DE Mike Daniels
