There's a reason why the 49ers have an open roster spot and were looking at kickers Tuesday. Jim Harbaugh revealed that kicker David Akers is injured - "Working through something," Harbaugh said - and might not be available for the team's game Sunday against the Rams.
The 49ers gave tryouts to veterans Nate Kaeding and Billy Cundiff on Tuesday. Both are right-footed kickers while Akers is a lefty. Holder Andy Lee has held for right-footed kickers before - most recently Jeff Reed in 2010.
It's not known when Akers was injured. He made a 27-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter Sunday, but then missed two others, the second of which was blocked. The 49ers, meanwhile, put Kendall Hunter and Kyle Williams on injured reserve this week, which opened up two roster spots.
One was filled by taking rookie running back Jewel Hampton off the non-football injury list.
