Harbaugh press conference canceled; team signs safety

Looking for more information from the 49ers head coach on the team's budding quarterback dilemma? Well, you're going to have to wait a day.

The team cancelled Harbaugh's 4:30 p.m. press briefing, which was going to be a conference call, because the coach had a follow-up evaluation at Stanford Hospital relating to his cardioversion procedure from last week. Harbaugh had the procedure on Thursday after experiencing an irregular heartbeat the previous night.

A team spokesman said that Harbaugh was fine and that the cancellation was due to a scheduling snafu. The coach is scheduled to hold a noon press conference on Wednesday.

The 49ers signed a young safety, Eddie Whitley (Virginia Tech), to the practice squad. He fills DT Matthew Masifilo's spot. The team now has three rookie safeties, draft pick Trenton Robinson and practice squadders Michael Thomas and Whitley.

Whitley (6-1, 191 pounds) had an impressive 40 time at his pro day (4.39 seconds) and spent time with the Cowboys this offseason.
