Hunter suffered Achilles tear, not sprained ankle

What seemed like an ankle injury to Kendall Hunter in the third quarter Sunday turned out to be an Achilles tear, according to a source with knowledge of the injury. Although the 49ers have yet to make a roster move, that type of injury is certain to end Hunter's season. He had been the 49ers' second-leading runner behind Frank Gore, and perhaps more to the point, offered a nice change of pace to Gore's straight-ahead style.

With two roster openings forthcoming, the 49ers are expected to activate running back Jewel Hampton from NFI/reserved list and to promote someone from their practice squad. That player likely will be linebacker Michael Wilhoite, who also played fullback in the offseason, or safety Michael Thomas. Both have special teams value.
