Quarterback Alex Smith and running back Brandon Jacobs are active for the 49ers today as they prepare to face the Saints. The 49ers said that Colin Kaepernick "is expected" to start, meaning that Smith will serve as his backup. Third-string quarterback Scott Tolzien is inactive.
Jacobs, meanwhile, was a free-agent addition this offseason and looked good early in the preseason. However, he suffered a knee injury in the preseason and hasn't played a snap since then. Jacobs only has been active for one other game this year, vs. Seattle. The Saints rank last in the league when it comes to stopping the run.
The other inactives are receiver A.J. Jenkins, running back LaMichael James, safety Trenton Robinson, guard Joe Looney, fullback/defensive end Will Tukuafu and nose tackle Ian Williams.
Running back Darren Sproles (hand) is active for the Saints but starting right tackle Zach Strief is not. Rookie Bryce Harris is expected to make his first-ever start in his place. Look for the Saints to use reserve offensive lineman Eric Olsen as an extra blocker.
