Smith still in black as Thanksgiving practice gets underway

The latest in the miniseries, '49ers Quarterback Diaries' is this: Both Alex Smith and Colin Kaepernick are saying that Jim Harbaugh told them yesterday that Kaepernick will get the first-team practice repetitions as the week begins but that the starter for Sunday's game is not set in stone. Have they been directed to say that to calm the storm that erupted last night when SI's Jim Trotter wrote that Kaepernick is the starter? You have to decide that for yourself.

Meanwhile, Smith was still in a black, no-contact jersey as practice began today. That would indicate hie still has not received final clearance from his Nov. 11 concussion. An ESPN report today says the opposite - he has been cleared. The truth is elusive on Turkey Day.

Harbaugh is not scheduled to speak today, but offensive coordinator Greg Roman is. We'll see what he says.
