Tight end Vernon Davis was on the field for the start of practice but was in a black, no-contact jersey and did not have his helmet. Davis suffered a concussion at the end of the first quarter Sunday and must pass the league-mandated protocol before he is cleared for a full practice. If he can't play Sunday, Delanie Walker and rookie Garrett Celek would fill in at tight end.
Justin Smith, meanwhile, was not on hand for practice. Smith (elbow/arm) was an observer during last Wednesday's session. He was not on the field for any other sessions while he was presumably rehabbing from his Dec. 16 injury. Look for Ricky Jean Francois to make his second straight start at right defensive end Sunday against the Cardinals.
Meanwhile, several other players were in black jerseys, indicating that they'll be listed as "limited" on the team's injury list this afternoon. They are outside linebackers Aldon Smith (shoulder) and Ahmad Brooks (shoulder), cornerback Tarell Brown (knee), fullback Bruce Miller (shoulder) and defensive end Will Tukuafu (back).
Jim Harbaugh today said the 49ers would not have Mario Manningham (knee) for the rest of the season. That will open up a roster spot that probably will be filled from within, he said. The two candidates are receivers Chad Hall and Ricardo Lockette. The latter - one of the fastest players on the team - has been with the team for most of the season. Hall, however, is familiar with the West Coast offense having played in Philadelphia and has more versatility. He can play running back and return punts.
