For the second time this month, a member of the 49ers has discovered that having a direct link to fans via social media has its drawbacks.
Kicker David Akers, who has struggled in recent games, re-tweeted this message around 7 p.m. Wednesday: RT @RIP_FreeLaddin YOU F----OT IF YOU MISS ONE MORE FIELD GOAL YOU ABOUT TO GET YOUR ENTIRE LIFE ENDED. Akers appears to have disabled his Twitter account, @DavidAkers2, shortly thereafter.
Akers is 25-35 on field goals this season after setting an NFL record for total field goal made (44) last season. The 49ers have brought in at least two free agents, Nate Kaeding and Billy Cundiff, for tryouts. Asked Monday if he is considering making a change at kicker, Jim Harbaugh said, "No, not at this time." Akers, who is in his 14th season, led the fan voting portion for the Pro Bowl at his position.
Earlier this month, running back Brandon Jacobs sparred with fans on Twitter and Instagram. His comments eventually led to a three-game suspension, which he currently is serving. Receiver and return man Kyle Williams also received death threats via Twitter after two muffed punts in the NFC Championship game in January.
