LaMichael James is up and Brandon Jacobs is down for today's game against the Dolphins. That isn't made official until an hour a half before kickoff, but players certainly get a sense of how they'll be used during the week's practice. That likely explains Jacobs' unhappiness this past week, which was documented here.
James, meanwhile, has not even been in uniform this season. (He wears No. 23). He and Anthony Dixon will provide relief for Frank Gore, who had a season-high 23 carries a week ago against the Rams and who hasn't broken the 100-yard barrier in five weeks.
In addition, first-round draft pick A.J. Jenkins is active, and this time he promises to see the field. Jenkins has been in uniform twice this season but has not played a snap. Mario Manningham's shoulder injury means Jenkins is likely to be part of the offense today and may even overtake Ted Ginn as the de facto No. 3 receiver behind Michael Crabtree and Randy Moss.
The other 49ers inactives: QB Scott Tolzien, S Trenton Robinson, G Joe Looney, NT Ian Williams and RB Jewel Hampton.
For the Dolphins, the inactives are: quarterback Pat Devilin, safety Jimmy Wilson, cornerback Michael Coe, linebacker Josh Kaddu, tackle Patrick Brown, tight end Michael Egnew and tight end Kyle Miller.
