Joy of flex: 49ers-Seahawks game bumped to prime time

The NFL announced today that the Dec. 23 game between the 49ers and Seahawks will be "flexed" to Sunday night in prime time on NBC. The game originally had been scheduled for a 1:25 p.m. start on FOX. The game previously in the prime-time slot, Chargers vs. Jets, was downgraded to a 1 p.m. start.

That means the 49ers will be featured in back-to-back prime time games. They visit the Patriots on Sunday, a game that also will be shown on NBC on Sunday night. The 49ers (9-3-1) lead the Seahawks (8-5) by 1 ½ games. Seattle, however, has the easier schedule and still can win the NFC West.

The matchup also features two head coaches who have been battling since they coached in the Pac-10. Pete Carroll's Seahawks have yet to beat Jim Harbaugh's 49ers in three tries. Dec. 23 also will be Harbaugh's 49th birthday.
