Justin Smith Watch: Defensive end absent as practice begins

On Wednesday, defensive end Justin Smith was on the field observing as his defensive line teammates went through practice. Today Smith (elbow) wasn't even on the field for the start of practice, raising the prospect that Ricky Jean Francois could start Sunday's game in Seattle.

Smith did not practice Wednesday. Neither did outside linebacker Clark Haggans (shoulder), who also is likely to miss today's session.

The players in black jerseys also was the same as Wednesday: Ahmad Brooks (shoulder), Tarell Brown (shoulder), Tavares Gooden (ribs), Mario Manningham (shoulder), Bruce Miller (shoulder), Aldon Smith (shoulder) and Will Tukuafu (concussion) likely will be listed as "limited" when the practice participation report is released around 4:45 p.m.
