Harbaugh talks Alex Smith, Charles Woodson and Glenn Dorsey

I bumped into Jim Harbaugh at the end of a San Jose State football practice and - I don't know if it was the spring-like weather or what - but he was quite cheerful and liberal (for him) with 49ers information. Harbaugh talked to the team after practice for about 15 minutes and had individual chats with tight end Ryan Otten and offensive lineman David Quessenberry, who are draft-worthy this year. He also talked to quarterback David Fales, who promises to be a big name in next year's draft.

On Alex Smith ending up with the Chiefs.
JH: Alex is a one-of-kind guy, and I think it's a fantastic opportunity for him. We had a real nice visit the day before he left. And the amount of respect, appreciation that we have for Alex is 10 out of 10 on the scale. I wish him great success.

What do you think about his fit with Andy Reid in Kansas City?
JH: Yeah, I think it's a great thing for the Kansas City Chiefs. Because Alex is a top performer. He's a top quarterback, and ... it was a tough decision. It was a tough decision to trade Alex, but I think his desire to start and play, and the competitor he is, we knew that he deserved that.

It seemed like there was a good amount of interest in him on the trade market. Can you give me a number as far as how many teams were involved?
JH: Yes, there was. More than a few.

Meaning .. between three and five?
JH: Yeah ... about that.

What position will Glenn Dorsey play? Is nose tackle where you think he'll end up?
JH: Yeah, I think the way Vic (Fangio) and Jimmy Tomsula do it, he's the nose with Ian Williams. Then if Ian comes along, he's going to get quite a few of those reps (at NT) and Glenn can be an end as well and take some of those snaps as well. So we have high hopes and expectations for his contribution.

Dorsey mentioned he ran into Justin Smith at the facility yesterday. Is Justin able to do some things in the weight room? Where is he in his recovery from triceps surgery?
JH: I haven't seen what he's been doing weight-room wise, but he's come in and gotten some treatment. I know he was looking forward to running the backside of this (Spartan Stadium) stadium here. He's chomping at the bit to do that. (Smith and others worked out daily at San Jose State during the lockout).

Can you talk about Charles Woodson's visit? Where do things stand?
JH: Still evaluating that. Had a real nice visit with Charles. I'm hurrying back right now. Louis Delmas is coming in. Going back to see him as well.

And Nnamdi Asomugha as well?
JH: Scheduled to, yeah. And Dan Skuta. Played at Cincinnati, supposed to come in today as well.

What happened to your forehead? (Harbaugh had a stitched-up gash that's perhaps two inches long on his forehead; his lip also is healing from a cut).
JH: I had a little accident at home. Just wiped out and hit the floor. ... It was racquetball, racquetball. I was playing racquetball. ... Drinking and fighting. I'm back to drinking and fighting again. Which story do you want?

I was going to ask if Jim Kelly was in town
JH: Yeah, everybody says that. ... (laughing) Back to drinking and fighting again.
