Unless he gets an offer he can't refuse, Trent Baalke says he's staying put with his next pick and he knows "absolutely" who he's taking. He won't have to wait long. The 49ers have the second pick in Round 2, No. 34. The Jaguars, who went with offensive tackle Luke Joeckel in the first round, pick first, and the expectation is that a quarterback will be taken in that slot.
Who do the 49ers take? Choices abound. They can go with a local player, Stanford tight end Zack Ertz or Cal receiver Keenan Allen. They can opt for a risk-reward pick in Florida State pass rusher Tank Carradine, who is recovering from an ACL tear. Or they could go with a mystery candidate who hasn't been linked very often with the 49ers such as cornerback Jamar Taylor or outside linebacker Corey Lemonier from Auburn. The 49ers also have pick No. 61 (2nd) and No. 93 (3rd) today.
I spoke with CBS Sports analyst Rob Rang who said the strength of the draft as Round 2 begins is at receiver. He highlighted Tennessee's Justin Hunter as someone who would be a nice fit for the 49ers. "Because Randy Moss at least presented you with the threat of a downfield receiver," Rang said. "And that's what Justin Hunter would provide early on. He's an excellent athlete."
Other names Rang mentioned: SMU defensive end Margus Hunt, Alabama defensive lineman Jesse Williams and Purdue defensive lineman Kawann Short. I asked Rang to give me a mystery candidate just in case Baalke was thinking about a sneak attack. His darkhorse - Southern Mississippi outside linebacker Jamie Collins, who had 6 ½ sacks and 19 ½ tackles for loss last year.
