The 49ers will bring in some training-camp kicking relief for both Andy Lee and Phil Dawson. The team has agreed to terms with UC Davis punter Colton Schmidt, who averaged 44.5 yards per punt last season, a school record.
The Bakersfield native had a tryout with the 49ers last month and impressed coaches, including special teams coach Brad Seely. Schmidt also can handle kickoffs, his agent said Wednesday, and he likely will help with both kicking and punting duties this summer. Schmidt had 41 touchbacks on kickoffs and punts combined last season.
Schmidt and the rest of the 49ers' rookie class will report for training camp July 19. The rest of the team will report five days later. The 49ers had an open roster spot to sign Schmidt. They also created another one by cutting longsnapper/tight end Kyle Nelson, who was with them in training camp last year.
Starting safety Donte Whitner is part of an NFL contingent that will travel to London next week in advance of the NFL games that will be played there this season. Whitner and the 49ers will play the host Jaguars on October 27.
The other players are Jared Allen and Kevin Williams of the Vikings, Uche Nwaneri of the Jaguars and Ramon Foster of the Steelers. On Tuesday the group will meet with the media at Wembley Stadium as well as visit radio studios. On Wednesday they will be in Birmingham taking part in a 'Chalk Talk' stage show for fans.
Vernon Davis was the 49ers' ambassador in 2010 before the team hosted the Broncos.
