Race to be Kaepernick's backup grows crowded after Daniels' debut

The race is on to be Colin Kaepernick's backup this season.

Jim Harbaugh today said that rookie B.J. Daniels' practice repetitions would increase this week so that they are in line with those of Colt McCoy and Scott Tolzien, who had been getting more snaps. Daniels, a seventh-round pick out of South Florida, had been getting some work at quarterback but also had been used as a running back, wide receiver and punt returner.

Asked if he was now a quarterback rather than an all-purpose player, Daniels said, "I've been playing quarterback all my life. So that's what I've always considered myself to be."

While McCoy and Tolzien struggled Friday in Kansas City - largely against the Chiefs starters -- Daniels threw the game's only offensive touchdown when he hit fellow rookie Chuck Jacobs on a nice, 14-yard touch pass in the fourth quarter against Kansas City's reserve defense. Daniels finished 6-9 for 72 yards and had a 128 passer rating.

"It was an encouraging performance, and he's done some encouraging things in practice as well," Harbaugh said. "So he continues on his process and he competed well and made plays. As far as it stands for him, it was encouraging. And when somebody does a good job you give them a little more."

McCoy, meanwhile, threw an interception while Tolzien nearly threw two. Both passes were dropped by Chiefs cornerback Dunta Robinson.

The 49ers traded fifth- and seventh-round picks in this year's draft to Cleveland for McCoy and a sixth-round pick. McCoy, a former Browns starter who is in the final year of his contract, has a 25.3 passer rating through two preseason games. Tolzien's is 56.9.
