Add former Cal receiver Lavelle Hawkins, who once starred opposite DeSean Jackson in the Bears offense, to a growing list of veteran wide receivers working out for the 49ers. The 27-year-old Hawkins will get a tryout today alongside fellow free agents Austin Collie and Laurent Robinson, a league source said.
Hawkins, who is from Stockton, was a fourth-round pick by the Titans in 2008 but never made much of a splash in five seasons there. He had 71 catches for 771 yards and just one touchdown. He returned seven kickoffs last year for Tennessee, averaging an impressive 29.3 yards a return. The Patriots signed the 5-11, 194-pound receiver in May to a two-year, $1.84 million contract but released him this week.
The 49ers have suffered through a number of injuries during the first seven days of training camp, including at receiver where Kyle Williams, A.J. Jenkins and Kassim Osgood have missed recent practices. Two other wideouts, Michael Crabtree and Mario Manningham, are on the PUP list.
