Snap judgments: Dahl starts but Reid gets snaps vs. Chiefs first string

Craig Dahl started at free safety for the 49ers in Kansas City, but Eric Reid played the most snaps at the position, 41, many of them against the Chiefs' first-string offense. Reid is one of several players to put a hit on Alex Smith. With the Chiefs facing third and 3 at the SF 4-yard line, Reid burst through the middle on a blitz, forcing Smith to rush his pass to the running back. It was incomplete.

Starting is a double-edged sword for the 49ers this preseason. It's fine if you're an established starter. But if you're someone fighting for a bigger role this year, it meant you watched most of the game. Marlon Moore, for example, started the game at receiver. He played four snaps while A.J. Jenkins and Chad Hall each had 38 snaps. Jenkins had 39 snaps against Denver.

The status quo did not change much at receiver from the Broncos game. The same two players, Anquan Boldin and Marlon Moore, started the game, and players entered in roughly the same order they did last Thursday. Austin Collie, who looked good in practices, again entered the game late. He played 21 snaps.
