Training camp D12: Harbaugh not happy with "raggedy" effort; Goodwin, Justin Smith return

The 49ers' annual FanFest at Candlestick Park ended on a botched quarterback-center exchange, which was an appropriate finale. The only public session of training camp was marked by bad snaps, dropped passes and false starts, and Jim Harbaugh called it the most "raggedy" practice of the summer.

"Wherever we practice, what you want to see is a good practice," Harbaugh said. "This definitely was a raggedy practice offensively. Not pleased about that. ... We'll look for a better one tomorrow."

One of the issues may have been that Jonathan Goodwin, who missed the last week of practices with an undisclosed injury, was back at center today and may have been rusty. Still, his backup, Daniel Kilgore, also had a bad snap or two, including the one that ended practice.

Several notable players did not make the 40-mile trip from Santa Clara. That group included left tackle Joe Staley, cornerback Tarell Brown, running back Jewel Hampton and safety Ray Ventrone. Harbaugh said those players were "working through something" but that the injuries weren't serious. Hampton did not play in Thursday's preseason opener.

In addition, first-round draft pick Eric Reid seemed to injure his lower back in practice and sat out the rest of the session. Cornerback Tramaine Brock and tight end Vance McDonald also had light practices.

Adam Snyder started at left tackle for Staley while Nnamdi Asomugha played right cornerback in Brown's place.

Beleaguered receiver A.J. Jenkins had a very nice, leaping, fingertip grab across the middle of the field on a throw from Kaepernick. But he also made a red-zone mistake when he allowed a Kaepernick pass to hit him in the chest. The ball bounced in the air and was picked off by safety Darcel McBath. Asomugha and Carlos Rogers also had interceptions on the afternoon.

Another wideout, Ricardo Lockette, also had a rough practice. He was lined up in the wrong spot on one play and had to be told where to stand. Later, Kaepernick took off running and Lockette didn't stay with his block. Kaepernick and Lockette are housemates, but that didn't stop the quarterback from admonishing his friend after the play.

With Colt McCoy in a blue, non-contact jersey because of a shoulder-neck stinger suffered Thursday, Scott Tolzien mostly served as the No. 2 quarterback while B.J. Daniels also was active. Harbaugh said he thought that McCoy, who was unhappy to be in a blue jersey, would be back for Sunday's session.

"Yeah, I think it was precautionary with Colt," Harbaugh said. "Sounds like he'll be full strength tomorrow." He also said that Daniels, who took no snaps at quarterback against the Broncos, would see some action Friday in Kansas City.

Justin Smith was back at practice after sitting out recent sessions with a broken finger. So was running back Kendall Hunter, who had a light practice but was happy to be back in uniform for the first time since a November Achilles' injury. ... Rookie linebacker Nick Moody also took part in practice after being helped off the field Thursday ... Donte Whitner and Craig Dahl were the starting safeties. With Reid out, Michael Thomas stepped in and played with the backups and had a strong practice.
