With cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha dealing with a knee injury, the 49ers today promoted practice-squad cornerback Darryl Morris to the active roster and signed pass rusher De'Aundre Reed to the practice squad. Morris (5-10, 188) went undrafted out of Texas State. He is one of the fastest players on the squad.
Reed (6-4, 260) was a defensive lineman in Minnesota but projects to outside linebacker/pass-rush specialist with the 49ers. Reed, 25, was a seventh-round pick by the Vikings in 2011 and he was active for six games last season. He was part of the Vikings' final cuts last month and worked out for the 49ers Monday.
The 49ers are short on pass rushers now that Aldon Smith is in treatment for an indefinite period. The 49ers on Monday placed him on the non-football injury list, and there is no time table for his return. He will miss Thursday's game in St. Louis for certain and could miss others as well. The move gave the 49ers an open roster spot they filled with Morris.
Veteran Dan Skuta is expected to start at left outside linebacker in Smith's place with rookie Corey Lemonier entering in passing downs. At one point this season, the 49ers had excellent depth at the position. But they traded both Parys Haralson and Cam Johnson for seventh-round picks in the upcoming draft.
