The 49ers have three quarterbacks on their roster, but they are not finished kicking the tires on quarterbacks. Former Cardinals quarterback John Skelton, who had a win against the 49ers in 2011, worked out for the team today, a league source confirmed. News of the workout first was reported by the SportsXchange's Howard Balzer.
Skelton, 25, started 17 games for the Cardinals during the last three seasons and has a 63.0 passer rating. One of his starts last year came against the 49ers. He threw an interception and was sacked four times in a 24-3 loss in October. However, he also earned a victory against the 49ers in 2011, throwing three touchdowns in a 21-19 win. In that game he relieved Kevin Kolb, who was knocked out of the contest early with a concussion.
The 6-6, 250-pound Skelton was part of the Bengals' final wave of cuts Saturday. Former 49ers quarterback Josh Johnson will back up Andy Dalton to start the season. Two other former 49ers quarterbacks, Seneca Wallace and Scott Tolzien, are with the Packers.
