Vernon Davis won't play vs. Colts; Aldon Smith to start

Aldon Smith is active today against the Colts, but Vernon Davis is not. The team's tight end, who was Colin Kaepernick's No. 2 option in a Week 1 win over Green Bay, suffered a hamstring strain last week in Seattle. With a game coming up Thursday in St. Louis, the 49ers did not want to risk exacerbating the injury. This would have been his first game against little brother Vontae Davis, a Colts cornerback.

Smith, meanwhile, will start at right outside linebacker despite a DUI arrest Friday morning. He'll be pitted against a reshuffled Colts offensive line. Mike McGlynn will start at center for injured Samson Satele while Jeff Linkenbach moves into McGlynn's right guard spot. Running back LaMichael James, who was listed as questionable on the 49ers' injury report with a sprained knee, is inactive for the first time this season.

The 49ers will enter the game with just two tight ends, rookie Vance McDonald and Garrett Celek. McDonald will start in place of Davis. The team has two fullbacks active this week, Bruce Miller and recent signee, Owen Marecic. Another tight end, Chris Harper, is not active.

The Colts also are missing two starters on defense. Delano Howell will make his first-ever start at safety in place of LaRon Landry. Kelvin Sheppard will start for Pat Angerer at inside linebacker.
