The 49ers today waived Chris Harper, a player they were hoping could one day fill the quasi tight end/wide receiver role that Delanie Walker played in previous seasons. Harper was a fourth-round pick by the Seahawks in April, and the 49ers signed him off Seattle's practice squad in early September. He has been inactive for every game this season.
The team will need to make room on its 53-man roster in coming weeks as players like Tank Carradine, Mario Manningham and, eventually, Michael Crabtree fully recover from injuries suffered in the last year. They may need a spot in the coming days for a defensive lineman.
If nose tackle Glenn Dorsey is unable to play with a sore hamstring, either Quinton Dial or practice-squad player Mike Purcell - or maybe both - would be added to the active roster.
