Good news, bad news: Crabtree practices in full, Manningham misses practice

The name "Michael Crabtree" was nowhere to be seen on the 49ers' injury/practice participation report today, and that's a good sign the 49ers receiver will make his 2013 debut Sunday against the Rams. Though he was permitted to practice with the 49ers three weeks ago, Crabtree alternately has practiced with teammates and rehabilitated on his own during that span, including last week. Today he practiced in full.

As is his habit, Jim Harbaugh was vague when asked whether Crabtree would play Sunday. He said he was "optimistic." "Hope for the best and we'll have a plan if he's not able to go," he said. "It's pretty much that simple."

Another receiver, rookie Quinton Patton, was listed as a limited participant. Patton seemed to be making strides up the 49ers' depth chart Week 4 against the Rams when he left the game with a broken foot. Today was his first practice since the injury.

The news wasn't as good for a third receiver, Mario Manningham. He's been listed with a knee injury the last two weeks but hasn't missed any practices. Manningham, who suffered two knee ligament tears 11 months ago, sat out today's session, however, as did linebacker NaVorro Bowman, who is listed as having both knee and shoulder injuries. The fact that the 49ers played two days ago also might account for a higher-than-usual list of non-participants in practice.

Did not practice: LB Navorro Bowman (knee, shoulder), CB Tarell Brown (ribs), TE Garrett Celek (hamstring), G Mike Iupati (knee), WR Mario Manningham (knee), DT Ray McDonald (ankle), DT Justin Smith (shoulder)

Limited: LB Ahmad Brooks (stinger), RB Frank Gore (ankle), WR Quinton Patton (foot), LB Dan Skuta (foot), LB Aldon Smith (shoulder)

Did not practice: G Harvey Dahl (knee), CB Trumaine Johnson (concussion), S T.J. McDonald (shin), RB Zac Stacy (concussion), G Chris Williams (concussion), LB Will Witherspoon (not injury related)

Limited: DE Eugene Sims (foot).
