Looking ahead: 49ers' most crucial contest with Arizona not Seattle

If the NFL season had ended on Sunday, the 49ers would not make the playoffs. Instead, division rival Arizona would grab the final seed and would visit the Lions in the first round.

Of course, the 49ers have yet to play this week. And if they beat the Redskins tonight, they would nudge out the Cardinals by virtue of their win over Arizona on Oct. 13. Still, it underscores San Francisco's thin margin of error over the final six weeks of the season.

It also means that the season finale against Arizona, and not the Dec. 8 rematch with Seattle, is the biggest game remaining on the 49ers' schedule. The Seahawks currently are 3 1/2 games ahead of the 49ers in the NFC West.

Current NFC Seeding:
1. Seattle 10-1
2. New Orleans 9-2
3. Detroit 6-5
4. Dallas 6-5
5. Carolina 8-3
6. Arizona 7-4
San Francisco 6-4*
Philadelphia 6-5
Chicago 6-5

NBC announced that the Carolina-New Orleans game on Dec. 8 would be "flexed" to the Sunday night game and that the previously scheduled game, Atlanta at Green Bay, would be played at 10 a.m. (PST)

That means the Seahawks-49ers game at Candlestick Park that day will remain at 1:25 p.m. (PST). As Niners Nation notes, FOX likely protected the 49ers-Seahawks game so that the network would not lose it to a rival.

The forecast for kickoff in Landover, Md. tonight: 33 degrees. The 49ers certainly are used to warmer temperatures but won't be shocked by the c..c..c..cold. The temperature at kickoff for their Dec. 16 win at New England last year was 34 degrees.
