Three of the newcomers to the 49ers' lineup, rookies Tank Carradine and Quinton Dial, as well as cornerback Eric Wright, are inactive for today's game with the Panthers. Meanwhile, receivers Mario Manningham and Aldon Smith are in uniform today for the 49ers.
In the run-up to the game, coach Jim Harbaugh hinted at a bigger role for running back LaMichael James, who had been a healthy scratch in the last three games for the 49ers. James is indeed active and could take over punt-return duties.
However, the former punt returner, Kyle Williams, also is active as is fellow receiver Jon Baldwin. Special team standout Kassim Osgood, a wide receiver, is inactive today. The team also recently released linebacker Nate Stupar, meaning that two members of their standout coverage teams will not be on hand against Carolina return man Ted Ginn today.
The 49ers have an abundance of defensive linemen with Justin Smith, Ray McDonald, Glenn Dorsey, Tony Jerod-Eddie and Demarcus Dobbs all active today. That means that rookies Carradine and Dial are inactive. Carradine only began practicing with the team this past week. He will hit the one-year mark since tearing his ACL on Nov. 27.
Aldon Smith, as expected, is active after rejoining the squad two weeks ago and going through his first full practice in six weeks on Wednesday. Smith still leads the 49ers with 4 1/2 sacks despite missing the last five games while in an out-of-state treatment facility.
