49ers pre-game: No Carlos Rogers, Steve Smith ready for Panthers

The 49ers will play their second straight game without their most experienced cornerback, Carlos Rogers, who was declared inactive 90 minutes before kickoff. Rogers warmed up before the game - including 20-yard sprints - but he has not practiced with the team since injuring his right hamstring late in the regular-season finale Dec. 29.

The 49ers' secondary will look like it did last week against Green Bay - Tarell Brown and Tramaine Brock will start at cornerback with Perrish Cox entering in nickel situations.

The 49ers were in the nickel formation throughout the Packers' game. They are expected to mostly be in their base package today against the Panthers, who are one of only five teams - the 49ers and Seahawks are two of the others - to have run the ball more than they've passed it this season. The 49ers were in their base package on 65 percent of the snaps in the teams' Nov. 10 meeting.

Meanwhile, Carolina receiver Steve Smith is active after missing recent games with a sprained knee. Smith practiced on a limited basis throughout the week but told reporters he wasn't at full strength. Smith finished second on the team to tight end Greg Olsen in receiving this season. Olsen had 73 catches, 816 yards and six touchdowns; Smith finished with 64 catches, 745 yards and four receiving touchdowns.'

Running back Jonathan Stewart, who finished a distant fourth on the team in rushing yards, this year, is inactive. He has not played since spraining his MCL (knee) against New Orleans in Week 14.
