A's closer Balfour added to A.L. All-Star roster

OAKLAND -- A's closer Grant Balfour has been added to the American League All-Star team, the A's announced this afternoon.

Balfour has converted all 25 of his save opportunities on the season and is the only closer in baseball without a blown save. The 35-year-old, who will make his first career All-Star appearance, recently broke Dennis Eckersley's Oakland record for consecutive saves and has saved his last 43 chances dating back to last season.

It was not immediately announced whom Balfour will be replacing on the team, but he may well be taking the place of teammate Bartolo Colon on the active A.L. roster. Colon, starting today for the A's against the Boston Red Sox, would only be eligible to pitch one inning in the game and had the option of removing himself from the roster.
