Bay Area teams sweep Player of the Month awards

Giants right fielder Hunter Pence, who on Sunday signed a new five-year contract and had the walk-off hit in the Giants' 7-6 season-ending win over the San Diego Padres, was named National League Player of the Month today, while A's third baseman Josh Donaldson was named the recipient of the American League award.

Pence led all players with 32 RBIs in September, establishing a new San Francisco-era record for the month, and a .667 slugging percentage while tying with Nationals third baseman Ryan Zimmerman for the most homers in the majors with 11.

Pence's week also included winning the Willie Mac Award, given to the Giants' most inspirational player, and becoming the first Giant since Alvin Dark in 1954 to start every game of the regular season.

Donaldson batted .337 in September with five homers, 16 RBIs and 20 runs while helping the A's win the A.L. West for the second consecutive year. Donaldson finished the regular season having played in 158 games while batting .301 with 24 homers and 93 RBIs, and has emerged for some as a dark-horse MVP candidate.

Before Donaldson, the last A's player to win Player of the Month was another third baseman -- Eric Chavez, back in September 2001. The last Giant to receive the N.L. award was Buster Posey in July 2010.

Kris Medlen of the Braves and Ubaldo Jimenez of the Indians were named the N.L. and A.L. Pitchers of the Month, respectively, while right-hander Gerrit Cole of the Pirates and right fielder Wil Myers of the Rays were named the Rookies of the Month.
