Cespedes' MRI shows tendinitis; Jaso takes step toward return

OAKLAND -- The results on Yoenis Cespedes' MRI came back showing tendinitis in the A's outfielder's right shoulder. Manager Bob Melvin termed that good news -- it means there's no tear, and Cespedes will remain in the lineup as long as he feels he can play. Melvin said the A's will "probably DH him for a bit here, and then when he feels good as far as throwing the ball, get him back in the outfield."

With Cespedes at DH tonight and the A's facing a right-hander in the Angels' Garrett Richards, it'll be Brandon Moss getting the start in left field. Moss has played five games in left this season and Melvin said he's "equally as comfortable" with Moss in left as in right field or at first base, where the majority of his playing time has come.

In other injury news, catcher John Jaso took a significant step toward returning from his concussion before today's game, hitting on the field and joining the A's for warm-ups. Melvin said it's still uncertain whether Jaso will be able to play again this season, but that Jaso was very encouraged by just getting back on the field with teammates.

"I think that's what this was all about, as far as a first step," Melvin said. "He's turned a corner here in the last four, five days where he feels pretty good, he's waking up feeling a lot better.

"Now to have baseball activity on the field will be a resource for him certainly to feel good about where he is -- if he's not able to play, then going into next season."

Jed Lowrie, meanwhile, is not in the lineup again. Lowrie said his sore right hamstring feels better today and Melvin said if he gets through pre-game stretch and hitting with no problems, Lowrie will likely return to the lineup Wednesday. Here's tonight's lineup:

CF Crisp
1B Barton
3B Donaldson
LF Moss
DH Cespedes
RF Reddick
2B Callaspo
C Vogt
SS Sogard

And the Angels' lineup against Sonny Gray:

DH Shuck
2B Kendrick
CF Trout
LF Hamilton
1B Trumbo
RF Calhoun
SS Aybar
C Ianetta
3B Romine

One more roster note -- reliever Dan Otero has rejoined the A's from Arizona, where he was with his wife for the birth of their first child. Otero and left-hander Brett Anderson, who left his last outing last Friday with back spasms, are both available tonight.
